Following a period of considerable change and instability we felt a need to re-group as a team, take stock of where we were and re-build our profile in the business. I received a recommendation to speak with Jeff Collins of Impact People Coaching to see if he could help. I met up with Jeff and quickly gained a good rapport. He worked alongside me to identify areas where the development programme could deliver the most impact. He also spent a full day in our office getting a personal and objective understanding of our day-to-day environment and meeting every member of the team on a one-to-one basis. He then designed a tailor-made programme which I approved and allowed him to facilitate. This transpired into a two-day, off-site workshop. As our business cycles become shorter and shorter, the pressure to focus on short term tasks increases, resulting a loss of cohesion between individuals and departments – everyone head down dealing with their own priorities and agendas. Jeff has prompted us to make the time to look at the bigger picture and to build a common sense of purpose and urgency, to appreciate the issues of others and recognise the contribution of each to the whole enterprise. We have faced up to the difficult relationship issues that hold us back and identified the barriers (both personal and organisational) that stop us from playing full-out, turning ourselves from ‘spotters’ into ‘sorters’. Our Company needed to make a step change in our sales approach and the way in which we develop our Key Customer Relationships to grow our business. For years we had marketed and sold our products in an isolated ‘features and benefits’ type of way. We needed to enable our Sales and Marketing team to transition from the ‘old way of doing things!’ and move towards building a more sustainable business relationship between us and our customers, particularly at MD and Director level. Having worked with Jeff and IPC at my former company (Rockwell Automation) I asked him to design a custom-built development programme to help us make this crucial transition. Knowing this was as much ‘Hearts and Minds’ as skills and capability, the programme firstly set out to significantly improve the manager’s Personal Effectiveness levels, focussing on their Self-Awareness and the impact they could have, relationship building and creative thinking to name but a few of the topics included. Having established a renewed sense of confidence and unity amongst the team, Jeff then facilitated the entire group to develop their own tools and processes (thus becoming their own) to be used to present a compelling business case to present to existing and new customers at director level. They even named it themselves as ‘The Teraski Value Proposition’ which has stuck ever since. This development programme was the catalyst to an outstanding period of growth which has seen our business grow by 49% over the past year. The role of a manager today at all levels is becoming increasingly challenging and complex. We recognised that while our existing development programmes, which concentrated on the skills and theories of leadership and management, engaged the brain they didn’t really engage the person. We identified a need for a fresh approach which would cut through the maze of conflicting priorities that all managers face and enable them to recognise “what is really important if I am to achieve my goals”. Things like, Your dependence on people to get results; Getting the best out of them; Leading by example; Taking ownership and accepting responsibility; Being positive in the face of adversity; Being in control; Being self aware; Building outstanding relationships; Keeping an open mind and continuing to learn. In short we wanted a programme that would balance technical competence, which our existing programmes addressed, with emotional intelligence which we believe can make the difference between a good manager and a great one. Impact People Coaching was recommended to us and we worked with Jeff Collins, the managing director, to produce a workshop which would form the foundation for all our existing first-line manager programmes and this is proving to be a great success. I personally attended one of these and found it inspirational. Even though I have been a manager for nearly 30 years I went away refreshed, energised and determined to improve my own performance. Jeff challenges people to take accountability for their own performance throughout the programme and prepares them with a realistic picture of the challenges of management. He also works with delegates’ line managers in order to prepare them to support the behavioural changes expected as a result of the programme. This allows the learning and “light bulb moments” gained on the programme to be transfer back into the work place with the support of the line manager. The feedback from the line managers attending has been so encouraging that this initial roll out has been extended to all managers in the form of “Personal Effectiveness Road Shows” and will be developed to form part of the development programme soon to be designed for our next level of managers.

Our Company had a real need to transform the business, from one that was a fairly successful small company to a World Class Organisation. Jeff Collins of IPC has been instrumental in helping us move closer to this vision.
